A frilly Easter basket

Seeing a bunch of homemade Easter baskets out there in blog land has motivated me to make my kids their very own baskets. Today I finished my daughter's. Here is how it turned out. Tutorial to follow :)

So I bought a couple crappy baskets at walmart for 2 dollars a piece. I cut off the handles and spray painted them cream:

I then measured the bottom and the sides of the baskets. Then cut out five squares adding a half inch on each side for a seam allowance.
turning the fabric over, I sewed each side piece to the bottom portion:

Since the basket tapers out, I cut four additional strips of fabric to be sewed on the corners. The fabric should be in a V shape:
Sew these four strips to each corner bringing all the sides together to make a "bag" and fit into basket:
Now measure around your basket and cut out a strip of coordinating fabric adding an inch for a seam allowance. Iron in half and make a tube:

Now take the measurement of the diameter of the basket and minus about 4 or 5 inches and cut a piece of elastic. Attach a safety pin to the end and work your way through the tube of fabric:

When you get to the end attach the safety pin to the other end of the elastic and sew up the tube:

Now take the lining out of the basket a iron down the edges and attach elastic tubing with pins:

Sew a straight stitch around the trim and fit into basket when finished (after taking out pins of course):
Now cut three strips of tulle and ruffle the fabric:
Attach all three tulle ruffles with your hand dandy hot glue gun:
Now cut two strips of both fabrics and two strips of interfacing. Iron on each side of strips and sew the strips together to make your handle:

Now attach buttons to each side by hand and sew handle onto basket by hand as well:
I then made a bow and attached a lace rosette to the front. Now here she is one more time:

I really love that is matches her room perfectly:
LOVE IT! Hope my daughter does too when she gets home from school. Stay tuned for Ethan's boy basket coming soon!

Too cute! I am living vicariously through you, no frilly stuff at this house. We are blues, browns, and all BOY!

You have redesigned your blog! It looks very chic. And the basket does exactly match her room.

Lovely!! I love anything ruffly. Or pink. ;) I might have to keep an eye out on clearance for those baskets after Easter...they'd be great just spray painted!

Thanks so much for joining my Weekend Bloggy Reading party. :)
